Machine learning for compositional data 

The Centre for Multi-dimensional Data Visualisation (MuViSU) and the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science are excited to offer a unique opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on a stimulating project focusing on machine learning for compositional data. This role is perfectly suited for an enthusiastic individual keen to make significant contributions to the field of machine learning, and in applying these techniques to address critical environmental issues in South Africa. 

 

Job description: 

  • Conduct innovative research in compositional data analysis, and machine learning (specifically tree-based models); 
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to advance the research goals of the centre and the department; 
  • Publish and present research findings in high-impact journals and conferences; 
  • Publish software packages in R/Python; and 
  • Assist with supervision of postgraduate students. 

 

Applicant requirements: 

  • Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics, Statistics, Data Science, Machine Learning or related fields, conferred within the past 5 years; 
  • Experienced in R and / or Python, optional: C++; and 
  • Excellent communication, writing and collaborative skills. 
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a proven research track record. 

 

This is a two-year fellowship, and the annual fellowship amount is R300 000 per year. In addition, please note that postdoctoral research fellows are not appointed as Stellenbosch University employees, and that the financial remuneration of the fellowships are awarded tax-free (they are categorised as a bursary). Postdoctoral research fellows are therefore not eligible for employee benefits. The successful applicant will report to a senior academic staff member of MuViSU.

The fellowship will start as soon as possible thereafter.
