CoDa-session at the International Geological Congress
Dear members of the CoDa-Association,
We would like to invite you to participate in the Compositional Data Analysis session at the International Geological Congress, Busan, Republic of Korea (25-31 August 2024).
Deadline for abstract submission is 16 February 2024, more details are available at https://www.igc2024korea.org/.
Details of the session are provided below:
- Title: Compositional data in geosciences: Methods and applications
- Keynote speaker: Raimon Tolosana-Delgado (Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology, Germany)
Element concentrations, modal mineralogy, particle size distributions or sediment petrography are data providing relative information, because the variables are all parts of a whole. These types of data, so called compositional data (CoDa), are frequent in fields such as geochemistry, hydrology, planetary sciences, petrology, sedimentology or metallurgy. In terms of method development, significant progress has been made in the development of CoDa techniques over the past two decades. On the application side, some of the data transformations have found their way into workflows, such as the centered log-ratio transformation. Overall, however, there is still great potential for broader application of CoDa techniques in the geosciences. In this session, we would therefore like to invite both methodological and geoscientific-analytical contributions, thus creating a platform for mutual exchange. The session seeks on the one hand method developments in CoDa analysis and on the other hand geoscientific case studies based on CoDa application e.g. interpretation of CoDa results or evaluation of the potential of CoDa methods.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to, exploration, geochemical mapping, process modelling, petrological classification, outlier detection, uncertainty modelling, missing values or visualisation techniques.
Please forward this information to your colleagues and PhD students who might be interested in attending.
We're looking forward to seeing you in Busan!
